KINSCAPE
Established in 2014, LA TRESSE is a laterally arranged organization whereby the three founding members co-choreograph and perform physically driven works that explore interdependence and the transporting power of imagination. Embodying a connection to pleasure, they craft contrasting worlds using imagery and archetypal symbolism, guiding audiences to places both familiar and unknown. With a commitment to intuitive decision-making and collaborative listening, their repertoire includes trios, ensemble compositions, and commissioned pieces.
KINSCAPE, conceived exclusively for the PHI Centre, was performed and created by: Erin O'Loughlin, Matthew Quigley and Laura Toma.

This work invites audiences on a psychedelic voyage to a universe which is both reflection and refraction of the world as we know it. A microcosm where past, present, and future co-exist, this community proposes an empathetic utopia, playful and fluid in its existence. Drawing upon the intelligence of nature, the work enlivens the senses and employs imagination, curiosity, and sensuality to conceive of an adapted world.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see a public performance of Banff Centre’s Final Tuning Dance Residency in the Jenny Belzberg Theatre. In this immersive and physically engaging work, co-choreographers and performers of LA TRESSE: Geneviève Boulet, Erin O’Loughlin, and Laura Toma, welcome two additional dancers of unique talent and depth to the ensemble.
The five performers of “KIN” invite audiences on a psychedelic voyage to a universe which is both a reflection and refraction of the world as we know it. A place where past, present, and future co-exist, this microcosm challenges doomsday narratives choosing instead to draw upon the intelligence of nature to conceive of an adapted world. Employing imagination, curiosity, and sensuality, “KIN” transports the public to an empathetic and playful utopia.

An outdoor performance.
Prelude #1 – The Circle: The dancers form a big circle on the public space. The circle represents the cycles of nature. It evokes ritual, a spirit of communion, unity. Prelude #1 reconsiders the notion of ritual in a context where the very idea of people gathering together is being called into question. This piece was captured on film by director Sandrick Mathurin and was part of the 39th International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA).
Prelude #2 – The Square: A symbol of a fixed, balanced world, the square is a human invention, an attempt at stabilization echoing the urban world around us, where the right angle reigns unopposed. The square suggests more regulated, more orderly behavior than the circle, even if the two forms are, in a way, complementary. With Prelude #2, the quadrilateral comes to life, pulsating in the heart of the townscape.

Created by LA TRESSE, Prima Materia is a procession for six dancers which combines voice and dance in honour of the lunar cycle. This ritual, which employs a Romanian folk song, celebrates the period in the lunar cycle where the moon is absent from the sky; the in-between moment of absolute potential that provides a metaphor for the current global context. Through the rhythmic patterns of their feet, the dancers create an architecture in the outdoor space that invites the public to meditate on the cyclical nature of life. The physical intensity of the bodies combined with the polyphony of voices transports the viewer to a world which straddles the mystical and the natural.

The perfect occasion to discover new trends in contemporary dance, this popular annual event introduces the public to the next generation of Québec dancemakers. A jury composed of artists Claudia Chan Tak, Alexandra “Spicey” Landé, Sébastien Provencher, Anne-Flore de Rochambeau and Jessica Serli selected three young local choreographers among nineteen candidates. For many of them, it is their first time presenting work in a professional setting. It is with much anticipation that we launch our season as our tradition requires since there’s never a dull moment with this eclectic program of short and sweet pieces!

“Being a Dino is not what it used to be. Likewise, ‘Dino’ is not what it used to be. Its story-world and choreography were not created with the coronavirus pandemic in mind. The film was shot two weeks before New York City went into lockdown and film and TV productions were halted. We never could have expected to be indefinitely stuck at home wearing masks just right after completing our one-day shoot. All throughout post we have been keenly aware of how the film’s themes of isolation, paranoia, and human connection have changed due to current events. It seems that though our story stayed the same, the message evolved to fit the times. Perhaps Dino captures a snapshot from a bygone era, reminding us that this new world is one we used to fantasize about.” - Claire Halloran & Alexander Lu (Directors)
